You Brightened the Photo So the Dent Would Show. Your Insurer Logs That as an Edit.
Verisk asked 1,000 consumers which edits to a claim photo are acceptable. 52% said adjusting brightness. Insurers now run those files through detection software that has a rejection lane, and 53% of them think most people altering claim media have no idea it can count as fraud.
Flood Cars Are Moving Back Onto the Lots. The Free VIN Check Sees Only the Insurers Who Joined.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau warned buyers on August 13 that flood-damaged cars are re-entering the used market. Its free VINCheck is worth running. The $10 federal database is the one every insurer and salvage yard is required by law to feed.
90,000 Drivers Lost Their Lowball Total-Loss Case. The Woman Who Filed It Still Got $4,000.
A federal appeals court blocked 90,000 State Farm policyholders from suing as a class over how their totaled cars were valued. The named plaintiff used the appraisal clause in her own policy instead and collected more than $4,000. That clause is in your policy too.

Find the right auto insurance for your situation.
Auto insurance questions, answered.
What factors affect my auto insurance rate the most?
Driving record, age, location, credit score, and the car you drive. A clean record can save you 20-40% compared to a driver with tickets or accidents. Urban ZIP codes pay more because of theft, traffic, and crash frequency. Credit score is a rating factor in most states, and a newer or pricier vehicle costs more to insure because it costs more to repair or replace. Translation: the carrier prices the risk you bring and the metal you drive.
How can I lower my auto insurance premium?
Pull quotes from at least three carriers once a year. That alone usually beats every other lever. Beyond that, raise your deductible (going from $500 to $1,000 can cut your premium by 15-25%), bundle home and auto, ask about safe-driver and low-mileage discounts, and keep your credit clean. Many carriers also discount paperless billing, paid-in-full policies, or a defensive driving course. The carrier is betting you will not shop. Prove them wrong.
What are state minimum coverage requirements?
Every state except New Hampshire requires drivers to carry a minimum amount of liability insurance. Requirements vary widely. California requires 15/30/5 ($15,000 per person, $30,000 per accident for bodily injury, $5,000 for property damage). Alaska requires 50/100/25. State minimums are the legal floor, not a recommendation. Most insurance pros suggest carrying at least 100/300/100 to protect your assets in a serious accident.
What is gap insurance and do I need it?
Gap insurance covers the difference between what your car is worth and what you still owe on your loan or lease if the car is totaled. If you owe $25,000 but the car is only worth $20,000, gap insurance pays the $5,000 difference. Worth buying if you made a small down payment, have a loan term longer than 60 months, or drive a vehicle that depreciates fast. Once your loan balance drops below your car's market value, cancel it.
Can I switch auto insurance mid-policy?
Yes, you can switch any time. No penalty for canceling before your policy expires, and most carriers refund the unused portion on a pro-rated basis. To switch cleanly: line up the new policy first, confirm the start date, then cancel the old one so the end date matches. Never cancel the old policy before the new one is active. Even a single day without coverage can lead to higher rates and legal trouble.
