If you pay your monthly cell phone bill with a Chase Freedom Flex card, your $800 phone insurance benefit disappears on September 20. The end date is in Chase’s own updated guide to benefits. It is not a rumor.
You have two moves this week. If your phone is already cracked, stolen, or otherwise eligible for a claim, file before September 19. If your phone is fine, decide which card is going to insure it after September 20.
Here is what happened. Chase quietly updated the Freedom Flex “guide to benefits” to say the cell phone protection benefit “will cover eligible losses incurred through 09/19/26 and will be discontinued 09/20/26.” No press release. No prominent cardholder email. Doctor of Credit and The Points Guy caught the language change and flagged it.
The benefit itself was one of the stronger ones on a no-annual-fee card. Up to $800 per approved claim, a $50 deductible, two claims per 12-month period, a $1,000 annual cap. All you had to do to activate it was pay your wireless bill with the Freedom Flex.
Here is the small consolation. On the same day, Chase is also killing the Freedom Flex’s 3% foreign transaction fee. Translation: they took away a benefit millions of cardholders could use every day and swapped in one that helps you only when you travel abroad. If you never leave the country, that trade is a downgrade.
Show the math. A busted iPhone screen runs $300 to $600 to repair depending on the model. A total loss on a stolen or unrepairable phone hits the $800 cap easily. Losing this benefit is real money the next time you drop your phone in a rideshare or a coffee shop bathroom.
If you have a recent or pending loss, do this now. Log into your Chase account, open the benefits center for the Freedom Flex, and start the cell phone protection claim. The claim administrator’s instructions are in the same benefits guide. Claims must be for losses “incurred through 09/19/26.”
If your phone is fine, switch which card pays your wireless bill before September 20. The Points Guy names four cards that still carry the benefit when you use them to pay your wireless: the Wells Fargo Active Cash (no annual fee, up to $600 per claim), the Chase Ink Business Preferred ($95 fee, up to $1,000), the Capital One Venture X ($395 fee, up to $800), and the American Express Platinum ($895 fee, up to $800). If you already carry any of them, the fix is a five-minute swap of the card on file with your wireless carrier.
The cheapest working move: put your wireless autopay on the Wells Fargo Active Cash, keep the Freedom Flex in the drawer for its 5% rotating categories, and treat the foreign transaction fee change as a footnote unless you actually travel abroad.
Not optional if you were using the benefit. The fix takes ten minutes. Do it before September 20.
