If You Carry a Sapphire Reserve, Chase Just Handed You Marriott Gold. Book Direct or the Fast Track Dies.

Chase Sapphire Reserve and J.P. Morgan Reserve cardholders can enroll for three free months of Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite between July 1 and September 30. Stay three paid nights during the trial and status runs through February 2028. Book through Chase Travel and the nights don't count.

If you carry a Chase Sapphire Reserve or the invite-only J.P. Morgan Reserve and any Marriott stay is on your calendar before September 30, Chase just handed you a shortcut to Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status. Three months of Gold shows up automatically when you enroll. Stay three paid nights during that window and Marriott extends the status through February 2028. Miss the booking rules and the shortcut disappears.

Here’s the setup. Registration is open July 1 through September 30, 2026, through the benefits tab on your Chase account. The initial three months of Gold are complimentary and land in your Marriott account within about three business days. To keep it past the trial, you have to complete three paid nights at any Marriott Bonvoy property before your three-month clock runs out, booked directly on marriott.com or in the Marriott Bonvoy app.

That last line is the trap. Bookings through the Chase Travel portal do not count. Third-party sites like Expedia or Booking.com do not count. Nights redeemed with points do not count. Chase built the promotion to route direct traffic back to Marriott, and if you use the wrong window your paid nights don’t qualify.

You also can’t enroll if you already hold Gold or higher, whether you earned it or you’re carrying it through Amex Platinum, which grants Marriott Gold as a card benefit with no stays required. If you’re a Platinum cardholder, this promotion is a null. Skip it and save the click. This offer is for the Reserve holder with no Marriott status or Silver Elite.

Real Gold Elite value on a couple of paid nights a year lands around $40 to $80.

Now the math. Marriott Gold Elite gives you a 25% bonus on Marriott Bonvoy base points, 2 p.m. late checkout when the property can accommodate it, enhanced Wi-Fi, and an enhanced room upgrade to a non-suite when one is open. What Gold does not include is worth knowing too: no lounge access, no free breakfast, no guaranteed anything at check-in. On a $250 paid two-night stay, the 25% base bonus is worth roughly $6 to $10 in points. A guaranteed 2 p.m. checkout on a busy travel day can save you a day-room fee, easily $50 to $100 at a downtown property. For a casual traveler with two Marriott trips a year, the annual value lands in the $40 to $80 range. Real money, but modest.

Do this. Log in to your Chase account this week and enroll through the benefits tab. Then look at your calendar. If you already have a Marriott stay of two or more nights booked through Chase Travel or a third-party site, cancel and rebook direct if the rate is close, so the nights actually count. If you don’t have anything on the books, decide by early September whether three paid nights fit your fall. If the trip won’t happen, the three free months still land and you keep Gold through late fall. No harm done.

One honest caveat. This is worth doing because the Sapphire Reserve annual fee is already $795 and Gold is a small extra pull from a card you’re paying for. It is not, on its own, a reason to keep the card. If you were on the fence about the Reserve, this promotion doesn’t move the needle enough to matter.
