If You Get SSI, That July 31 Deposit Is Not a Bonus. It's Your August Payment.

Two SSI payments will land in July 2026: one on July 1 and one on July 31. The second is not extra money. It's your August payment arriving a day early because August 1 falls on a Saturday and the Social Security Administration doesn't cut checks on weekends. Spend it in July and August 1 arrives with an empty account.

If you get Supplemental Security Income, two payments will land in your account this month. One on July 1. One on July 31. The second one is not extra money. It is your August payment, arriving a day early because August 1 falls on a Saturday and the Social Security Administration does not cut checks on weekends.

Spend it in July like it’s found money and August 1 arrives with an empty account.

Here is what actually happened. The Social Security Administration issues SSI on the first of every month. When the first is a weekend or a federal holiday, the payment moves to the last business day before it, so recipients still get their check on time. August 1, 2026 is a Saturday. So the August SSI payment moved to Friday, July 31.

The July 1 deposit is your July payment. The July 31 deposit is your August payment. Same amount either month. No new money.

Translation: it looks like a bonus and it isn’t.

This happens every year the calendar cooperates. It happened this year in May, when June 1 fell on a Sunday and the June SSI payment landed May 29. It will happen again later this year, because November 1 is a Sunday, so the November payment will hit Friday, October 30. If you are new to SSI, you are going to see the second deposit hit and wonder what’s going on. Now you know.

The move is boring. Treat the July 31 deposit as if it arrived on August 1. If your rent drafts on the first, set the payment for August 1 and don’t touch the money until then. If your utility bill drafts on the third, same. Whatever bills the August SSI normally covers, those are the bills it still covers.

The trap is treating both July deposits as July income. That means overspending in July, then landing on August 3 with no rent, a $75 late fee, and a very unhelpful call to your landlord. The Social Security Administration does not send another payment. There is no advance available for spending August money in July.

You don’t need to do anything if you already run tight to the calendar. If you use direct deposit, both payments hit your usual account. Direct Express card users get both loads the same way. No form, no call, no action to take.

There is one thing worth checking. If you switched from a bank account to Direct Express in the last month, or the other way, log into your my Social Security account at ssa.gov the day after July 31 and confirm the deposit routed to the right place. If it did not, calling Monday morning gives you the best shot at fixing it before August rent hits.

For anyone on Social Security retirement or disability benefits, none of this applies. Your July payment came on your birth-date Wednesday. Your August payment comes on the same schedule in August. The July 31 shift is only SSI.

For anyone getting SSI plus retirement, you got the SSI on July 1 and the retirement portion on July 2. The July 31 deposit is the August SSI only. Your August retirement payment still comes on its normal date.

File this away for October. October 30 is a Friday. November 1 is a Sunday. Two SSI deposits will hit in October, nothing in early November. Same rule. Same fix.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there two SSI payments in July 2026?

SSI is paid on the first of every month. When the first falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment shifts to the previous business day so recipients get it on time. August 1, 2026 is a Saturday. The Social Security Administration moved the August SSI payment to Friday, July 31. The July 1 payment is the July benefit; the July 31 payment is the August benefit. The total for the two months is the same.

Does the July 31 double payment apply to Social Security retirement or disability benefits too?

No. Only SSI works on the first-of-the-month schedule that triggers this shift. Regular Social Security retirement and disability payments follow a birth-date schedule (Wednesday of the second, third, or fourth week of the month for most beneficiaries), so they are not affected by August 1 landing on a Saturday. If you get SSI plus Social Security, you got the SSI portion on July 1 and the Social Security portion on July 2, and the July 31 payment is only the August SSI.
